Michigan Travel Guide
Michigan consists of two peninsulas that extend into the Great Lakes, actually touching four out of five of the magnificent bodies of water that contain 80 percent of the United States’ fresh water. The state has the peculiar shape of a mitten and residents can often be seen raising their open right hand and pointing to where they live.
Michigan provides visitors with many incredible sights, including superb lakes, skylines and ski resorts. Snow is virtually guaranteed from November to April, which means that downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, snowboarding, tobogganing, tubing, skating, the luge and even dog sled racing can be enjoyed for six months of the year.
Most of the state is well forested, with the Upper Peninsula home to a variety of wildlife, and boasting trout fishing lodges and winter ski resorts. The southern part of the Lower Peninsula is mainly characterized by rural farmlands and industrialization, but the west coast offers several popular beach resorts. Michigan boasts more than 44 downhill ski centers and in excess of 2,000 miles of cross-country trails, many offering special family packages, children's programmes and even 'wrinklies' programmers for those over 55. The cross-country ski trails lace Michigan's millions of acres of forests. These trails range from the well-groomed, plotted variety at several luxury resorts to those that pass through some of the best of the wilderness pathways in the Midwest.
Lansing is the capital of Michigan but Detroit is the biggest city. Detroit is the car capital of the world. The Sloan Museum, the Henry Ford museum, and the Automotive Hall of Fame celebrate this role
